2023 Liveability Census for Community Groups

Give your group a voice at the table

Have your say in future planning decisions which affect everyone

Listening to communities across the country

In 2021 Place Score conducted the first Australian Liveability Census. Over 32,000 surveys were collected from people across the country, in both urban and rural areas, and across all age groups and cultural backgrounds. We asked respondents to rate the suburbs that they lived in and to tell us about their ideal neighbourhoods. The results are being used by councils, state governments and property developers to help guide future investments and ultimately provide public spaces and infrastructure which align with community priorities. You can read a summary of our findings in our State of Place 2021 report.

What does the Australian Liveability Census ask your community?

1. What is most important to you in your ideal neighbourhood?

These questions capture a community’s preferences for different aspects of liveability. For example residents in a small coastal town might emphasize proximity to nature, while capital city dwellers might prioritise availability of public transport. Younger respondents often look for things to do in the evening, while older respondents often prioritise community resilience.

2. How liveable is your neighbourhood?

The second set of questions asks your community to rate each of the 50 peer-reviewed liveability attributes: natural environment, cycling paths, safety, local jobs and business, etc. These allow us to derive a ‘place experience’ score out of 100 for each response, and – when sufficient responses are collected – for a whole neighbourhood.

3. What big or small idea would make your neighbourhood a better place for you to live?

The open-ended question is linked to our incentive competition, enabling each participant to win a widely accepted shopping voucher. The qualitative responses provided support the earlier quantitative data and bring to life real issues which matter to the community.

Participation benefits

The unique benefits of participating in the 2023 Australian Liveability Census are:

Enable your group to kickstart respectful and effective dialogue with your local councils or members of parliament.

Effective democracy requires more than voting every four years. The Liveability Census runs every two years and gives you a real say in the future of your neighbourhoods.

Contribute to invaluable national research to understand the impacts of Covid, climate and the economy on local liveability.
