Listening to communities across the country
The 2023 Australian Liveability Census is an online survey open to all people living in Australia. It is open between 26 March and 30 June. We want to know how you rate your current neighbourhood, as well as what you’d like to see in your ideal neighbourhood.
The first Australian Liveability Census in 2021 captured 32,000 responses from people across the country, in both urban and rural areas, and across all age groups and cultural backgrounds. You can read a summary of our findings in our State of Place 2021 report. The results are now being used by councils, state governments and property developers to help guide future investments and ultimately provide public spaces and infrastructure which align with your priorities.
Your responses will help shape the future of Australian neighbourhoods.
What questions does the Australian Liveability Census ask?
1. What is most important to you in your ideal neighbourhood?
We want to understand what you care about most. Is it proximity to nature, or perhaps availability of public transport? Do you prioritise shopping, night life, dog walking or perhaps sporting facilities? Council funds are always limited so your answers will help guide future investments.

2. How liveable is your neighbourhood?
The second set of questions asks you to rate 50 liveability attributes: natural environment, cycling paths, safety, local jobs and business, etc. These give us a good picture of what your area is like and what could be improved. They enable us to calculate a ‘place experience’ score out of 100 which you can share on social media. Councils and state governments use your feedback to improve your neighbourhood for everyone.

3. What big or small idea would make your neighbourhood a better place for you to live?
These open-ended questions allow you to express your ideas succinctly and are linked to our competition. We ask for your email address so that we can contact you regarding the competition and for future research. Councils, state governments and property developers use your answers to design better public places.
