Every two years, Place Score facilitates Australia’s largest social research project – the Australian Liveability Census. We partner with local and state governments, the private sector and not-for-profit organisations to invite the Australian community to share what is most important to them and how their local neighbourhood is performing. Our objective is to understand liveability from the perspective of our nation’s diverse population and provide decision-makers with the evidence base to enhance the lives of local communities. Since 2019, more than 330,000 responses have been collected to build the country’s largest social research data set, with the results being utilised for decision-making, reporting, planning and communications.

Liveability is defined in the Australian curriculum as ‘an assessment of what it is like to live in a place’.

The Liveability Census asks communities to:

  1. Share a little about themselves
  2. Select the 15 liveability attributes that are most important to them
  3. Rate the impact of 50 liveability attributes in the place they currently live
  4. Share an idea for their local neighbourhood that would make it better place for them to live

Together the results can help refine future engagement, identify community strengths and priorities and provide tracking and benchmarking metrics over time.

The main differences are in the timing, variations and the support. The Liveability Census provides a more affordable option than a Liveability survey.

The 2027 Australian Liveability Census will open on Neighbour Day, Sunday 28th March 2027 and close at midnight on 30 June 2027.

  1. Get the timing right
Your organisation can undertake their community engagement at any time during the three-month window. You can go hard and fast in April or slowly across the whole time period
  2. Choose a high-return channel
From our experience, one stand-alone, direct email to your largest database is the most efficient way to meet your target.
  3. Focus comms for representation
Once you have the base numbers, use social media and other more localised channels to target hard-to-reach groups such as youth and men.
  4. Track and refine what works
You will receive a ‘tracking dashboard’ link a month before launch. This will show you your results in real time, and that will help guide your communications efforts to reflect your target respondents.

After the Census closes on the 30th June, Place Score will need to review and clean 10s of 1,000s of records before we can commence the data analysis and reporting. Platform Partners will start receiving their results at the beginning of August 2027, with all other reports delivered by the end of September 2027.

We will be in contact to provide updates and, for those partners who have a presentation included, to book in those sessions.

If, for some reason, you need your results fast-tracked, please get in contact.

Partners in the Australian Liveability Census utilise their data for a range of projects, from strategic planning and reporting to engagement planning, grant applications and acquittals. A key benefit is being able to benchmark your community’s liveability against your region, state and the rest of the country.
