Millennials have always been seen to be different from other generations. Growing up with unlimited technology and social media access has seemed to create a divide that has been hard to navigate. There has been lots of guesswork and anecdotes, but what do we really know about the values of this group?

Millennials have always been seen to be different from other generations. Growing up with unlimited technology and social media access has seemed to create a divide that has been hard to navigate. There has been lots of guesswork and anecdotes, but what do we really know about the values of this group?
In the past, Millennials have been subjected to all kinds of generalizations. In placemaking this has meant steering places towards the ‘instagrammable’, a focus on programming engaging activities, on the ‘wow’ factor.
But what if you really want to know what is important to them? You could do one of two things – the first being you could Google it. When you google “how to attract Millennials?” or “what do Millennials care about?” you’re going to get about 14,600,000 results in just 0.47 seconds. And have you read the articles? One will say “Go paperless- Millennials are only attracted to technology,” and another will say “Millennials are into old school technology now- have a pay phone or bust!” With so much contradictory information out there, it is easier to get it wrong than right.
The other option is to ask them. That’s what we did here at Place Score. We have asked 3,134 Millennials from across Australia what is most important to them when it comes to their places – and they have told us, so now we can share these insights with you to help you make better cities.
